Seeking to grow in our
understanding of God’s Word is important. We need to move from there to
ask the question: Why are we seeking to increase our understanding of
God’s Word? We are to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). An increase in knowledge is to be accompanied by growth in grace.
We
can easily get ourselves confused when we’re reading the most difficult
parts of God’s Word. That’s when we need the reminder: God calls us to
obey His Word –– “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words
of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the
time is near” (Revelation 1:3).
When we start thinking that we’ve made some progress in mastering the Bible’s difficult passages, we need to be reminded that God calls us to love Him and to love our neighbour – “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1).

We
must never forget the words which follow the call to grow in Christ –
“To Him be glory both now and for ever” (2 Peter 3:18). In all our study
of God’s Word, may we always say, “He must increase, but I must
decrease” (John 3:30).
